Best Bets for the Weekend - Update with Weather Cancellations And Some New INDOOR Best Bets

Free festivals and cool concerts in Meriden this weekend.

It was too good to be true – there were so many great outdoor events planned for today, but it looks like a steady fall of rain has foiled our plans. But, there's still some great places you can go this weekend to get out! We've added a few more to our original list -- and feel free to check our event listing.

Where/When: Museums, galleries, the opera house, so many venues throughout Connecticut.

Why Go: Today is open house day in Connecticut, and more than 200 varied venues throughout the state are free to visit, or offering special deals or programs. Check out a comprehensive list HERE. In Meriden, CaRo Art Gallery and Sandman Gallery are each hosting special events for the day.

Where/When: , 105 Miller St, Meriden, Saturday, June 11, 2:30 pm.

Why Go: My City Kitchen's resident wonder chef Kashia Cave will demonstrate how to cook a great lunch for dad -- with pan-seared chicken with mango kiwi salsa, Calypso rice with organic salad, and red velvet cupcakes for dessert. (Here's hoping she makes many extra.)

Where/When: , Broad St & E Main St, Meriden, Saturday, June 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Why Go: NPR's Chion Wolf will host the Q. Walter Peabody Foundation's annual gala concert for the arts in Meriden, complete with "Beethoven, Bach, singing girls, dancing men, and a wine-and-dessert reception." Plus, proceeds go to creating a Meriden-wide arts scholarship.

4. H.M.S. Pinafore

Where/When: St. Andrew's Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden, Sunday, June 12, at 4 p.m.

Why Go: The Greater Meriden Community Chorus performs one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous musicals.

Pricing: $10 in advance by calling 203-237-9198, $15 at the door

Where/When: , 213 Evansville Ave, Meriden, Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Meriden's chapter of the EAA – or Experimental Aircraft Association – is offering free flights in its airplanes to children 8 - 17 years old.

Where/When: Meriden YMCA Mountain Mist Outdoor Center, 576 High Hill Rd, Meriden, Saturday, June 11, 2011 from noon to 4 p.m.

Why Go: There's going to be a llama. That's enough incentive for us, but if you need more convincing, there will also be a climbing tower, pony rides, swimming, music, a bounce house, face painting and balloon animals.

Where/When: , West Main Street and I-691, Meriden, Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: It's a picnic in the park devoted solely to senior citizens - complete with music, free refreshments like hot dogs, ice cream, watermelon and popcorn, an Antique Veterans Flag Raising ceremony, and bingo. Be sure to bring a folding chair.
