Local World War II Veteran to Receive Citation

James Fontana will also be honored next month by the French government.

 

Meriden native James Fontana will receive an official World War II citation during a ceremony Monday.

Fontana is a World War II veteran who served in Europe as a bomber pilot in the U.S. Air Corps, flying extremely dangerous missions over France.

Next month in New York, he will be recognized by the French government for his contributions to the war and will be appointed a “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor.

“James Fontana is a war hero who helped to liberate France,” said state Sen. , R-Meriden.   “He risked his life on a daily basis so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.  This ceremony is one small way to show him how much Meriden residents appreciate what he has done for all of us.”

will present the citation to Fontana during the ceremony, which will take place at 10 a.m., at the Broad Street World War II Honor Roll memorial.
