Best Bets for This Weekend: Festive Fundraisers

Meriden has a bounty of charitable festivities in store for this weekend.

This is a great weekend to be in Meriden. The city is hosting several festive fundraisers. We’ve listed a few of them here. Check the Patch calendar for others. And if a fall clean-up day is more your speed, keep in mind that the Meriden Transfer Station is allowing free bulky waste disposal on Saturdamorning.

1.

When/Where:  Thursday, September 29, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., Courthouse Plaza (or inside at the Senior Center if it rains)

Why Go: You can support a host of city nonprofit organizations while sipping on your choice of more than 30 varieties of wines from as far away as Australia to as close as Meriden’s own Silver City Merlot. Food, music and original work by local artisans will also be part of the event.

Pricing: $20 in advance/$25 at the “door”

When/Where:  Friday, September 30, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., Courthouse Plaza (or inside at the Senior Center if it rains)

Why Go: Enjoy a rockin’ good time while tasting international beers and microbrews, enjoying the third annual Taste of Meriden, and sampling slices from the first (and hopefully annual) Silver City Pizza Pie Contest. Oh, and while you’re at it, you will be helping to buy new computers for St. Joseph School.

Pricing: $20 in advance/$25 at the “door”

When/Where: Saturday, October 1, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Hubbard Park

Why Go: Help to raise money for the Meriden Humane Society, the city’s no-kill animal shelter, while enjoying a day of outdoor fun that features a 5K race (at 9:30 a.m.), a Pet Walk (at 11:30 a.m.), animal demonstrations, and lots of information about services and resources for pets.

Pricing: Free (There is a fee to enter the road race or pet walk.)

When/Where: Saturday, October 1, 7 a.m. – 12 p.m., Waste Transfer Station on Evansville Road

Why Go: If you come down with a case of fall fever, you may feel the need to do a large scale clean up around the house and yard. The city is allowing FREE disposal of bulky waste items at the transfer station on Saturday morning.

Pricing: FREE!

5.

When/Where: Sunday, October 2, noon – 5 p.m., Mountain Mist YMCA Outdoor Center on High Hill Road

Why Go: This day of family fun filled with food, music, raffles and more benefits the Daniel R. Jakiela Memorial Scholarship Fund. The highlight will be , where 1,000 numbered golf balls are dropped from a helicopter. Closest to the pin wins $1,000!
