Lyman Orchards 41st Annual Winterfest This Weekend

The event features ice carving demonstrations, husky dog sled rides, snowboarding and tubing and lots of food.

With record snowfall here in Connecticut this month, the cure for cabin fever will be in full swing during Lyman Orchards 41st Annual Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 23rd and Sunday, Feb. 24th. The weekend of family winter fun is made possible in part by Big Y World Class Markets and is free to the public.

One of the main attractions for 2013 is a snowboard park with a mountain of snow courtesy of the snow-making experts from Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort. Winterfest guests can strap on a snowboard and take a run or slide down on a tube.

“Lyman Orchards has a long and proud tradition of bringing families together to create all-natural memories that last a lifetime,” said John Lyman III, executive vice president of Lyman Orchards. “We’ve expanded our activities this year to include the excitement of a snowboarding and tubing park that will offer guests a thrill. We’ll also have plenty of treats, including our hot apple cider, soups and other delicious home-made foods to warm our guests.”

To dazzle guests with their artistic skills, four champion ice carvers will use chainsaws and other tools to turn 300 pound blocks of ice in to frozen works of art. More than an art show, the ice carvers will also interact with the audience and explain their ice carving secrets.

The event also will feature Husky dog sled rides and a guest appearance from 15-year-old Bailey Vitello, who participated in last year’s Junior Iditarod. Vitello will demonstrate the skills he uses with his team of  Alaskan Huskies. Guests also can enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, fruit-tree pruning demonstrations by expert Lyman arborists, snow tubing and snowboarding, and plenty of free prizes and raffles.

Indoor activities will focus on food, where guests can enjoy the Apple Barrel’s warm and friendly offerings of samples of cookies, breads, soups, cheese, sauces, beverages, and Lyman’s award-winning handmade pies.
