Linear Trail Reopens After Volunteer Clearing

The popular 1.3 mile trail along the Quinnipiac River was blocked by fallen trees and branches after October's freak snowstorm.

Just about a week ago it looked like the Linear Trail might not open until spring.

But after a weekend of volunteers to remove the fallen trees and debris from October's freak snowstorm, the city's trail along the Quinnipiac River officially reopened this week, according to Linear Trail Advisory Committee Chair Joseph Zajac.

Groups of volunteers, most of whom are affiliated with the city goverment, worked Friday and Saturday wielding chainsaws and rakes, Zajac said. The effort was organized by the newly reelected Mayor Michael Rohde and his Constituent Services Director Eddie Siebert.

"A heartfelt thanks to those who helped in clearing the Quinnipiac River Gorge Trail over the weekend," said Zajac in an e-mail Monday night.

The Linear Trail is 1.3 mile long pathway that starts at the Red Bridge in South Meriden on Oregon Road.
