Meriden Man Charged in Series of Thefts Along Highland Avenue

Police said the 28-year-old allegedly took scrap metal and car batteries out of numerous vehicles at businesses along Highland Avenue in 2012.

A Meriden man is facing numerous charges stemming from a series of ongoing thefts that took place at various businesses along Highland Avenue between September and December 2012, Cheshire police said Thursday. 

Detectives served multiple warrants of Matthew Matteis, 28, on Wednesday as he appeared in Meriden Superior Court on another charge, according to a press release from the Cheshire Police Department

Matteis, of 155 Franklin St. in Meriden, is facing charges including six counts of tampering with a motor vehicle, four counts of third-degree larceny, four counts of first-degree criminal mischief, four counts of third-degree criminal trespassing, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, two counts of sixth-degree larceny and one count of conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny. 

He remains in custody in lieu of $195,000 in court set bonds,according to the state Department of Corrections

Police said an investigation revealed that Matteis had gone to several Highland Avenue businesses over the four-month period in 2012, taking various scrap metal, batteries and other parts off of vehicles contained on the property. 

He was wanted on an active warrant when he was arrested on similar charges pending out of Meriden, the police report said. 

Matteis is due back in Meriden Superior Court on April 24,according to court records. Further details were not immediately available Thursday.
