Where/When: Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Polish Falcons Nest 519, 144 Prout Hill Road, Middletown

Why Go: If you’ve never been to a Penguin Plunge, it’s a chilly sight to behold. All proceeds raised (plungers must raise at least $50 in pledges) during the frigid frivolities go to the Connecticut Special Olympics.

Pricing: Free to spectators; $50 minimum donation for plungers

Where/When: 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, North Italian Home Club, 43 Thorpe Ave., Meriden

Why Go: The two New York comedians might not be the draw at this Arc of Meriden-Wallingford event … Meriden Mayor Mike Rhode is scheduled to be the master of ceremonies.

Pricing: $20, which includes appetizers

Where/When: 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Xavier High School, 181 Randolph Road, Middletown

Why Go: Several area restaurants will present their delectable items from their menus in this Mardi Gras-themed “A Taste of Xavier” event. Live and silent auctions will be held.

Pricing: Tickets are $40 in advance, or $50 at the door

Where/When: Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Lyman Orchards, 32 Reeds Gap Road, Middlefield

Why Go: Make no mistake, this event isn’t just for kids. It’s for the kid in all of us. Festivities will feature world-class ice-carving pros competing against the clock, dog-mushing demonstrations and horse-drawn wagon rides.

Pricing: Free; food for purchase.

Where/When: Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Connecticut Convention Center, 100 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford

Why Go: Check out the show’s 25 gardens created by professional landscapers and nonprofit organizations while you browse the multitude of flowers, plants and pieces of gardening equipment for sale.

Pricing: Adults: $14; Children 7 - 14: $2; Children under 6: Free.
