Snow/Rain Combo Tuesday Could Hold Hazards

Governor urges caution on roads, warns of power failures

Snow, rain, and freezing rain are all headed for Meriden early Tuesday morning, if the National Weather Service is reading its tea leaves right.

That will make for a tough commute on city and state roads, added to the feet of snow already on the ground. Gov. Dannel Malloy released a statement Monday night recommending drivers go slowly and carefully and watch for ice on the roads.

The NWS issued a winter warning for the area from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, saying that "snow should develop after midnight and mix with and change to sleet and freezing rain by afternoon." Freezing temperatures Tuesday night are expected to turn that rainfall into ice.

The weight of the snow and ice could bring down trees and power lines, officials say.

"Please alert the authorities if you see any drooping power lines and be aware of any flat surfaces which may be at risk due to snow, ice and rain accumulation," Malloy said.

Malloy has not announced any delays in start times for government offices as of 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, nor has the Meriden Board of Education made any pronouncements about school closings.
