State AG: Be Wary of Repair Scams

Attorney General George Jepsen says some impostors going door-to-door offering repair of storm damage for cash payment.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen is warning state residents to be on guard against people going door-to-door offering storm-damage repairs.

Jepsen said in a press release that his office has gotten reports of individuals claiming they were working for utilities companies offering to reconnect electric power to storm-affected residents for cash payments of up to $2,500. Other services offered include tree removal and home repairs.

Jepsen, in the release, reminded residents that utility companies and their authorized contractors carry ID and will not ask for payment for their work.

“Everyone is weary of living without electricity. Everyone wants to get their lives and property back to normal. But don’t fall victim to those who are trying to take unfair advantage of your distress," Jepsen said. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Jepsen's office and the state Department of Consumer Protection both advise hiring only contractors licensed by the state to repair damage. He also urged consumers to always verify the registration and insurance of any individual or company before allowing them on their property. Also, Jepsen cautioned residents against buying generators from unlicensed retailers who are offering them, sometimes from the backs of trucks.

“Given the serious risks posed by a damaged or defective generator, consumers should be sure purchase them from a reputable business,” Jepsen said. “Consumers should always confirm that any generator they purchase is suitable for their home and is connected and working properly.”

Suspected scams can be reported to the Office of the Attorney General at attorney.general@ct.gov or to the Department of Consumer Protection’s Hotline at 1-800-842 2649 during business hours and at 860-713-6160 after-hours and on the weekend.
