December 2nd “No!” Rev. Dr. Jan Carlsson-Bull
New Member Sunday
On this first Sunday of December, we will formally welcome new members to this congregation.
As for the sermon topic and focus otherwise, how can your minister begin this month of holidays and holy days with a service on “No?” Consider how many of us become overwhelmed with the mega-demands of Christmas (Hanukkah and Kwanzaa tend to be more gentle with our resources). Ponder your expectations as a child. Reflect upon how you may still seek to fill the expectations, perceived or real, of family and friends at this season of “deck the halls” and “Joy to the World.” This topic was inspired by one among you who is simply burnt out by the myriad demands of work and church! How will we ever make it to “Silent Night, Holy Night” if we don’t summon the wisdom of realizing what we can and can’t be and do through an occasional guilt-free “No?”
