as the New Amsterdam Boys Choir, it has broadened its mission to now include
girls. Its purpose is to enrich the lives of children 8-18 in the East
Harlem community, using choral singing as a catalyst. The choir performs
throughout New York City and has traveled to performance sites throughout New
England and in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Nebraska. As the New Amsterdam Boys Choir, the
troupe made three trips to Germany. The Boys and Girls Choir’s founding director and conductor is
James Backmon, a longtime resident of East Harlem, who attended Queens College
Aaron Copland School of Music and has directed a number of choirs in the
metropolitan area.
