“Last Year in Kandahar”

A year minus a day ago, a good
friend and colleague delivered as an Army chaplain a confession for his
comrades in Afghanistan. He is now home, but not without some stinging
souvenirs from his superiors, for what he shared in Kandahar is a gift commonly
denied to our active duty servicewomen and men and our veterans. In the spirit
of this confession, might we honor our veterans and also hold the original
focus of what is now Veterans Day—that is, Armistice.
