A Glimpse into a Firefighter's World

I had a great opportunity today to participate in a live fire exercise with our firefighters. I learned a lot of things, but I got a glimpse of what a firefighter's world is like.

Today I had the opportunity to “train” with firefighters and get a glimpse into their world.  I’ve always had a great respect for them, but today I gained much more appreciation for this profession. I admit the idea of participating was scary at first to say the least.  Being involved in a live fire exercise isn’t exactly my idea of a fun time.  When I pulled into Station 1 today, I admit I was a little anxious and thought I must be crazy to do this.  I was quickly greeted by firemen who started to ease my fears.  I was taken on a tour of the course and shown all of the safety features.  I was starting to feel better; then came time to suit up.  This must have been comical to them.  It felt like I gained 30 pounds, between the boots, the pants, the jacket, the helmet and don’t forget the air tank and then I had to start walking. I now know why firemen do not run.  It’s almost impossible and they would never have enough stamina to finish the job.

My first exercise was entering a house fire.  When entering, on your knees, there is so much smoke you can not see.  I mean not even an inch in front of your face.  Then you see the flames, in front of you and above you and feel the extreme heat all around you.  It was a little scary not being able to see or even be able to find your way out, not mention to remember to breathe normal so you don’t use up all your air.  I felt very comfortable and safe knowing a firefighter was never more than arm’s reach away.  My second experience was breaking down a door to enter a fire and locate a victim.  Using an axe to help my partner pry open a door in full gear was no easy feat for me, but I did manage to do it.  It’s not an easy task to find a victim when you can’t see a thing so teamwork is essential and these firefighters have this skill down to a science.

I admire these men and women greatly.  My experience was completely controlled and they knew what to expect and were prepared for me.  This is not the case for them.  Every fire is different, with different obstacles and risks each time.  There is nothing predictable for them.  Each time they enter a fire their life is on the line.  There are no shortcuts, no easy outs.  It’s their training, their skills and each other that will get everyone out.  I hope I never have to call upon them, but I am confident in their abilities and I know they are all dedicated.  I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to our entire fire department.  I’d like to give a special thank you to Lt. Brendan Noonan and his team for sharing their world with me and taking good care of all us today.  Meriden is fortunate to have all of you!
