Meriden detectives and officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the cause of a construction accident that left a worker seriously injured after a retaining wall collapsed at the site of the new Class Act Car Wash on Wednesday.

The worker, who is in serious condition at Hartford Hospital, was in between the retaining wall and a dump truck digging along the wall to install new curbing when the wall collapsed, pinning him against the truck, according to a press release from the Meriden Police Department.

"On arrival emergency crews found one male construction worker pinned against a dump truck by a retaining wall that had collapsed," Lt. Sal Nesci said. "The male worker was extricated and taken to Mid-state Medical Center and later flown to Hartford Hospital by Lifestar Medical Helicopter."

The name of the worker has not been released.

Nesci said the site of the new car wash has been under construction for a number of months and was nearing completion.

"This case is being investigated by OSHA with the assistance of the Meriden Police Department Detective Division," he said.
