Meriden Couple Seriously Injured in Car Accident

Life Star was called to the scene.

A Meriden couple was seriously injured when their car struck a tree at East Main Street and Preston Avenue in Meriden at approximately 2:04 a.m. Sunday, according to Meriden police.

David Arvelo of 33 Union Street, Meriden, the driver of the vehicle, was transported to Hartford Hospital by Life Star helicopter and underwent emergency surgery. He is currently in critical condition, said Sergeant Robert Nesci of the Meriden Police Department.

The driver’s wife, Zorida Arvelo, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Hartford Hospital by Hunter’s Ambulance and was initially listed in serious condition, Nesci added. A hospital spokesperson this morning reported that Zorida Arvelo is now listed in good condition.

Arvelo was driving a 2007 Chrysler 300 east on East Main Street. He attempted to make a turn onto Preston Avenue and lost control of the vehicle, Nesci said. The car struck a large tree and sustained heavy front-end damage.

The Meriden Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the accident. Witnesses are asked to call Lieutenant Tom Cossette at (203) 630-6256.
