Meriden Man Charged in New Britain Homicide

New Britain police have arrested a Meriden resident that officers said shot a man in the driveway of a home on Kelsey Street just before midnight Sunday.

Officers have taken a Meriden man into custody after an investigation led by the New Britain Police Department revealed he had gone to a home in New Britain and shot a man from point blank range while he stood in a Kelsey Street driveway.

A joint investigation led to the arrest of Jonathan Gibbs, of 92 Pettit Drive in Meriden, on Monday afternoon. Gibbs is facing one charge of murder in connection with the New Britain homicide, according to New Britain Police Chief James Wardwell.

Gibbs, 26, remains in police custody in lieu of a $3 million bond and is due for arraignment in New Britain Superior Court on Tuesday.

According to police, the charges stem from an incident that took place on Kelsey Street in Meriden just before midnight on Sunday. Police said Gibbs shot and killed 18-year-old Isaac Smith from point blank range using a handgun.

“Responding officers located 18-year-old Isaac Smith in the driveway (on Kelsey Street),” Wardwell said. “The victim, Smith, was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was transported by New Britain EMS to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

Following the discovery, Wardwell said New Britain police entered into an investigation with the Meriden Police Department and New Britain State’s Attorney that ultimately culminated in Gibbs arrest.

Further details of the incident were not immediately available.
