(Updated) One Injured in Meriden Factory Fire

Firefighters are exploring whether lightning may have played a role in an afternoon fire along Hanover Road in Meriden.

One firefighter has been taken to MidState Medical Center with undisclosed injuries after a factory fire erupted Tuesday afternoon near Fair Weather Antiques on Hanover Road.

Fire officials responded to the area at 763 Hanover Road with reports of a fire and arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the Fair Weather Antiques shop. The firefighters explored the area and determined the flames had erupted next door in a factory type building believed to be used to make pewter, officials said.

The fire was knocked down in under an hour and was doused around 2:25 p.m., but officials remain on scene to investigate as smoke continued to show from the building. Wallingford and Berlin firefighters were called to assist in covering the city as officials respond.

Fire Chief James Trainor told the Meriden Record-Journal that the fire may have started following a blot of lightning that struck the area.

Officials confirmed reports that a firefighter was injured in the response, but the extent of the injuries and name of the firefighter have not been released.

Further details of the incident were not immediately available.
