Photo Op: Blumenthal Congratulates Meriden Fire On Grant

Meriden's Fire Department received a $600,000 FEMA grant for a new ladder truck last week.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) was in the Pratt Street Friday morning for about two minutes when bells started ringing and the firefighters he had come to see went speeding off - losing about half the crowd in an engine to one call, the other half a few minutes later to a different one.

The departure was not, the handful of firefighters and local politicians left assured, staged for effect, but it was a good way for the senator to see the department in action.

Blumenthal had come to tour the Meriden station to meet with the firefighters who had a federal grant for $600,000 through FEMA to help replace a 24-year-old ladder truck.

The grant will pay for half of the estimated $1.2 million truck, the city will pay the balance.

Fire Chief James Trainor gave the senator a quick tour, before he was off to West Hartford for a pinning ceremony for new firefighters there.
