Plane Flips Over At Meriden Airport; Pilot Hospitalized

A small personal plane flipped onto its roof at the Meriden-Markham Municipal Airport Tuesday afternoon, sending one person to the hospital with minor injuries.

Meriden firefighters and police responded to the report of a plane crash at 1:45 p.m. at the north end of the runway, said Meriden Assistant Fire Chief Russell Donovan.

The sole occupant, an unidentified man, was able to extricate himself from the overturned plane, Donovan said. Hunter's Ambulance took the man to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. Donovan said the man was conscious at the time.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration are on their way to determine what caused the plane to flip.

Donovan described the plane as a small, personal vehicle and a "hobbyist" plane.

The airport, while owned by the city if Meriden, shares runway space with Wallingford.
