Police: Men Posing as Water Department Employees Burglarize Home

Residents are reminded that city employees are identified by ID cards, uniforms and city vehicles.


Meriden Police say two men claiming to be city employees burglarized a home on Sunbright Drive last weekend.

On January 26, 2013, at about 11:15 a.m., the suspects approached two elderly homeowners claiming there was a problem with their water.

The victims allowed the pair into their home, police said.

One suspect went to the basement, distracting the homeowners, while the second perpetrator broke into a cabinet and stole $5,000, according to police. Detectives gathered some evidence and canvassed the area for any video or witnesses but were unsucessful.

This is the second incident of this type in the Gravel Street area in the last few months.

One of the suspects is described as a white male in his fifties with a chubby build and about 5’9” with a New York accent. The second suspect is described as a white male in his forties with a heavy build, about six feet tall, with a possible Spanish accent. 

Residents are reminded that City of Meriden Water Department employees have ID cards, uniforms, and marked City of Meriden vehicles.

Homeowners who are suspicious should call the police department to verify the employee’s status.

Detectives are investigating whether this incident is connected to others that have happened in other towns in the state.
