Police: Surgeon Allegedly Tried to Bribe Meriden Officer

Police say the man, under arrest on charges of disorderly conduct, allegedly asked an officer if he could "offer some money to make this all go away."

A Meriden surgeon is being charged with allegedly trying to bribe an officer while being processed during an arrest in late December.

Police say Dr. Aurangzeb Ali, 43, of 154 Finch Ave, was being fingerprinted at the Meriden Police Station on a simple disorderly conduct charge on Friday, Dec. 30th at around 7:30 p.m. when he told one of the arresting officers that he had money, police said.

Ali allegedly asked if he could "offer some money to make this all go away," Police Spokesman Det. Lt. Mark Walerysiak said Monday.

The officer did not initially charge Ali, who had been arrested and was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct stemming from a domestic incident, with bribery, but went to his supervisor to see if the man's claim would constitute a bribe even though he did not name a specific amount, Walerysiak said.

The two decided that there was enough to apply for a warrant application and did so the next day, Saturday, Dec. 31. Trying to bribe a police officer is a felony in Connecticut.

The warrant took about a week to process, and after being served, Ali reportedly turned himself in on Friday, Jan. 6, at about 3:46 p.m. He was released on bond, according to Walerysiak.

Ali is a surgeon at MidState Medical Center with the Surgical Associates of Meriden. According to his profile on the center's website, he has been practicing for 13 years and specializes in general surgery, undersea and Hyberbaric Medicine.

Walerysiak said the charge of bribery is extremely uncommon.

"We haven't had many people make offers to officers," Walerysiak said.

Last time I checked this was America and one is INNOCENT until proven guilty. A little presumptuous of the author. Must have been a slow news night.

"Police: Surgeon Allegedly Tried to Bribe Meriden Officer". Does not sound like a pronouncement of guilt to me.
