David Lowell Joins Council in Seat Left Vacant by Thorpe

The chief operating officer for Hunter's ambulance was selected this week to take over the empty Meriden City Council seat left when longtime council member Trevor Thorpe resigned.

David Lowell has long been a familiar face in the Meriden community, helping serve residents and business owners as a member of the Hunter’s Ambulance administrative team and taking an active role in community service.

Now the chief operating officer of Hunter’s will have a chance to do even more as the newest member of the Meriden City Council.

Lowell, 48, was selected this week to take over the council seat left vacant when former City Council member Trevor Thorpe was forced to resign from his role due to a change in his residency. Lowell was sworn in on Monday during the council’s meeting.

“It had been a desire of mine,” Lowell told the Record-Journal last week. “Though I wasn’t successful, I got a lot of votes and had a lot of support and I met a lot of great people in the community that I otherwise may have not met.”

Lowell, a Democrat, ran for office in 2011 as a councilor-at-large but was ousted as a candidate when he received fewer votes than Republicans Kevin Scarpati and Walt Shamock. He will need to seek reelection in November during the next local election.

Mayor Michael Rohde said this week that Lowell is a good fit because he already has a strong knowledge of the community and has been active in various organizations around Meriden. He is a member of the Meriden Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, the Arc of Meriden-Wallingford and coordinator of the annual “Spirit of Giving” program.

Thorpe, who has served on the council for nearly eight years and was serving as the Deputy Majority Leader, is leaving due to a change in residence. He and his wife, Carol, will be moving to a home in Wallingford that has been in the family for more than 250 years.
