Elizabeth Esty Makes it Official: Congressional Campaign

After forming an exploratory committee and publicly announcing her intentions to run, Esty today made it official.

Elizabeth Esty of Cheshire, a former Democratic state representative, announced Monday she will seek election to represent Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2012 election.

She is running for the seat which became open when Congressman Chris Murphy of Cheshire (D-Conn.) announced earlier this year he would run for the U.S. Senate. Meriden is in the 5th District, which covers much of the northwest part of the state.

“I have decided to officially jump into the race,” Esty said in a release. “It’s important that Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District send someone to Washington who will fight tirelessly and effectively to bring good-paying jobs back to our state. I commit to work with members of both parties to lay the foundation for a strong economy, ensure that we have jobs for our children, and restore prosperity to the middle class.”

Esty served two terms as a Democrat on the Town Council and one term as a state representative in the 103rd district.

“The most important thing the government can do to help create jobs is to ensure that its own fiscal house is in order, and on that, my record is unmatched in this election,” Esty said.

Esty, a Harvard-educated lawyer, is married to state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Dan Esty. Together they have three children: Jonathan, a sophomore at Cheshire High School; and Sarah and Thomas, both of whom are currently attending Harvard University.

“I look forward to getting the chance to meet with and listen to the voters of northwest Connecticut over the coming months to learn more about how we can work together to address their concerns in these tough economic times,” Esty said.
