Public Hearing on Plans to Increase Fares and Reduce Bus and Train Service

Meriden will be the site of one in a series of public hearings on the state Department of Transportation (DOT)'s proposed plan to raise fares on CT Transit buses by about 10 percent and on Metro-North and Shoreline East trains by about 16.5 percent. The plan, which came about as part of Governor Dannel Malloy's Plan B budget-cutting proposal, would also eliminate Shoreline East weekend service and reduce service on some CT Transit routes yet to be named.

If the plan is enacted, fares on local buses, including those serving Meriden, would raise from $1.25 to $1.35 as of November 1, 2011. The senior and disabled fare would increase from $.60 to $.65, the ADA paratransit fare would climb from $2.50 to $2.70. The cost of the express bus to Hartford and multi-ride passes would face similar increases.
