Former Meriden Fire Marshal Inducted into CT Veterans Hall of Fame

William George Godburn, a World War II veteran, is one of 12 veterans to be inducted in the Hall of Fame Class of 2012 on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman joined with Veterans Affairs Commissioner Linda Schwartz on Tuesday to announce the induction of 12 new members to the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2012.

Former Meriden Fire Marshal George Godburn, a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II, was among the dozen mentioned in a news release issued Tuesday.

Godburn, of Meriden, became a member of the Meriden Fire Dept. in 1954, holding the positions of Fire Marshal and head of the Bureau of Fire Prevention for 22 years.

He also helped to start the Meriden YMCA Men’s Club and has served as the president of the Tri-Town Golden “K” Kiwanis Club.

Godburn also has served on the School Building Committee, Public Utilities Committee, and the Board of Directors of the Kuhn Center and the Conservation Commission.

“The Hall of Fame recognizes distinguished veterans who have made significant contributions to their communities after leaving military service," Wyman's office said. "Wyman and Schwartz will be joined by the honorees and leaders of the state’s veterans’ community at the induction ceremony on Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m. in the Atrium of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.”

Here are the other 2012 Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame inductees:

  • Manuel Michael Cardoza, Jr.: US Army, Korea/ Corporal Medical Tech. – Preston
  • Paul Francis Dillon: US Navy, Vietnam/ Master Chief Radioman – Gales Ferry
  • Peter Galgano, Jr.: US Marine Corps, Vietnam/Sgt. E-5 – Bristol/East Berlin
  • Norman Hanenbaum: US Marine Corps, WWII / Corporal – Farmington, West Hartford and Haddam
  • Alan Jepson: US Navy, WWII / Seaman Second Class – Milford
  • Charles Richard Morrissey, Sr.: US Army, Vietnam/2nd Lieutenant – North Haven
  • Herbert Thomas Schacht: US Army, WWII/ PFC-Tec 5 – Quaker Hill
  • Thomas Patrick Sheridan, Esq. (Deceased): US Army, Vietnam/ SP5 Intel Analyst – East Hartford/Glastonbury
