General Assembly Decrees State Polka, Second State Song, Other Important Stuff

And you thought your legislators didn't do anything.

By Senior Regional Editor Elissa Bass.

Connecticut's General Assembly got a lot of important things done this session: a budget, the nation's toughest gun laws, dog breeds cannot be discriminated against.

But hidden among all that high-level legislation were some other, equally impressive bills that passed.

Thanks to the Connecticut Mirror for pointing it all out:

  • The 'ballroom polka' is the official state polka.
  • The second official state song (behind 'Yankee Doodle Dandy') is "Beautiful Connecticut Waltz," written by Newington-based country singer-songwriter Joseph Leggo in 1949.
  • March is Irish-American Month
  • October is Italian-American month
  • November is Native American Month
  • June 24 is French Canadian-American Day

Listen to "Beautiful Connecticut Waltz" here.
