Price of Stamps Going Up at End of Month

The debut of the U.S. Postal Service's 46-cent Forever stamps brings rate changes on Jan. 27.

 

It's soon going to cost you an extra penny to mail a letter.

The U.S. Post Office recently announced that, effective Jan. 27, stamp prices will increase 1 cent to make way for the new 46-cent Forever stamp.

The price to mail a 1-ounce letter will increase from 45 cents to 46 cents, but the cost for letters weighing more than 1 ounce will stay the same, at 20 cents for each additional ounce.

Letters under 1 ounce mailed anywhere internationally will cost $1.10 and postcard stamps will also see a 1-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents.

Highlights of the new single-piece First-Class Mail pricing include:

  • Letters (1 ounce)—1-cent increase to 46 cents.
  • Letters additional ounces—unchanged at 20 cents.
  • Letters to all international destinations (1 ounce)—$1.10.
  • Postcards—1-cent increase to 33 cents.

Those looking to save a few cents could stock up on the postal service's Forever stamps (costing 45 cents until the 1-cent increase on Jan. 27), which are usable even after stamp prices change.
