A new study by the New York City-based Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a policy watchdog organization, says that Route 5 and Route 1 in Connecticut are among the state's deadliest highways for pedestrians, according to a published report. Most of the deaths along the roads were clustered in the southern part of the state and in the Hartford area.
In Meriden, Route 5, a main east-west highway in Connecticut, is known as both Broad Street and the Berlin Turnpike. In Berlin, the highway is known as the Berlin Turnpike, a major route used by travelers in the region.
