Seniors Now Able to Fish at Hubbard Park

City Council votes to extend permission for fishing at Mirror Lake to the 65 and over set.

Move over kids. Starting Tuesday, there will be a new demographic pulling whoppers out of Hubbard Park's Mirror Lake.

At least that's what the City Council is hoping. On Monday night, the council approved a resolution to allow seniors 65 and over to fish at Mirror Lake. The measure was introduced by Mayor Michael Rohde, at the request of local fisherman Mike Roberts, who Rohde said told him it was sad to see so few people out fishing in the park.

Fishing in Mirror Lake has otherwise been restricted only to children and adults who are accompanied by children.

Monday's resolution was unanimously approved - and lauded especially by the seniors on the council.

Councilor Walter Shamock (W), 80, reminisced about his father bringing him to Hubbard Park to fish as a child. "It was an enjoyable day," he said.

"To do this for the seniors -- I think it’s long overdue," Shamock added. "I wish I had thought of it."

Before they can cast, though, seniors must have a valid fishing license, said City Councilor Danté Bartolomeo, Chair of the city's Public Works and Parks & Recreation Committee, which they can get for free at City Hall.
