Storm Update: Meriden Schools Remain Closed, Parking Ban Still in Effect

The following storm update was provided by City Manager Lawrence Kendzior at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Meriden Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, February 13, 2013.

A Parking Ban is still in effect in Meriden. The Meriden Police Department has been actively ticketing cars today that were found to be violating the Parking Ban. Cars parked in the road while a Parking Ban is in effect pose a hazard to the drivers and significantly slow down the cleanup process.

City crews assisted by private contractors and Yankee Gas made good progress today. According to the Public Works Director all streets will be passable by later this evening. Tomorrow, crews will begin widening the streets to return them to near normal conditions. This involves pushing back the snow towards the curb and in some cases removing the snow or portions of it to improve safety. Widening the streets may place additional snow at the end of your driveway and/or on your sidewalk. Your continued patience is very much appreciated during the cleanup process.

The Meriden Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is shutting down its operations at 8:00pm this evening. If you have unplowed streets to report, please call 203-630-4259 after 8am tomorrow morning and City staff will take down your information and pass it along to the Public Works Department.

If you know the location of a fire hydrant in your area that is buried with snow and no longer visible, the Fire Department would greatly appreciate your assistance in removing the snow from around the hydrant so that Fire Trucks can quickly and easily locate it in case of emergency. It could be a matter of life or death.

After a normal snow storm, residents and businesses are required to clear their sidewalks of snow within 12 hours of the storm ending. Given the magnitude of this storm, the City is asking you to begin clearing your sidewalks as soon as possible. Residents and businesses will have 24 hours from the time their street is widened to clear their walkways.
