More than 100 Sears and Kmart Stores to Close
Illinois-based Sears Holding Corp. announces it will close 120 Sears and Kmart stores throughout the nation, but hasn't revealed which ones.

The Sears Holding Corporation, which owns both the Sears and Kmart chains announced in a press release Tuesday that it would shutter between 100 and 120 of its underperforming stores Tuesday, based on poor 2011 sales.
The company, based in Illinois, said it has not fully determined which stores it will close, but when it does it will announce this on www.searsmedia.com.

The closures could hit close to home. A large Sears store anchors the Westfield Shopping Center in Meriden. The shopping center recently lost a large national retailer when all of its stores in the nation this summer. In Connecticut, there are also Sears stores in Manchester, Putnam, Waterford, West Hartford, Milford, and Waterbury, according to the Sears website.
Kmart stores in Connecticut include locations in Cromwell, Waterbury, Watertown, Southbury, Torrington, Vernon, and Milford.
The company blamed the decline in sales at the two stores on fewer consumer electronics and clothes sold at Kmart, and a decrease in appliances and consumer electronics sold at Sears.
