Weekend in Review: Apple Harvest Festival Part 1

On Friday, October 4th, 2013, the 45th annual Southington Apple Harvest Festival got underway.   For most people, the AHF is a means of traffic being detoured as countless people buy apple fritters buy the dozen only to try and freeze them so they don't run out before the following year.

However, this is my second year in a row attending the Apple Harvest Festival, and I have found that other food there is just as good- if not better- as the fritters themselves.

Many of the food booths from last year, and other booths in general, have returned, though one of last year's highlights for me- Green Mountain Coffee- did not make their return.

Last year, getting a free cup of coffee from Green Mountain every morning and several reusable cups to boot made for a most enjoyable experience with the company that doesn't have a franchise on every corner in Connecticut.

Through everything else on Saturday though, my highlight was easily seeing the very talented Matt Vizzo perform.   The tent was set right across from the dining area, making it hard to miss his projected voice and acoustic guitar.

With typical singer/songwriter numbers thrown into his set from names like Jack Johnson, Vizzo went above and beyond what should be played in three hours of cover songs that people would be able to recognize and sing along with at will.

From the Dirty Heads to House of Pain, how often do you get to hear someone cover "Jump Around" when you're expecting quite the opposite?

A quick search of Google following his performance Saturday finds Matt Vizzo has his own website complete with mentions of a couple of bands he is a part of as well.    If no one else, he at least made one new fan this past weekend by performing at the AHF.

His music was definitely much more enjoyable to me than sitting through a parade in the cold rain.  Serious Question:  Does Southington plan these huge gaps in their parades on purpose?
