Architects Update School Building Committee On High School Renovation Plans

The architects tasked with reconfiguring Platt and Maloney High Schools shared changes to their original plans -- including removing lower-level classrooms at Maloney.

The architects for the simultaneous renovation projects at Platt and Maloney high schools also updated the city's School Building Committee on their progress Thursday night, which is still in the very early stages.

Design plans for Maloney have been adjusted to eliminate classroom space in the lowest of the four planned levels for the school. After studying the topography, the architects determined that below-ground classroom space would not be feasible.

The classrooms originally planned for that level are being redistributed among the upper three levels, architects for the firm of Fletcher Thompson detailed.

Antinozzi Associates, the architects for Platt, are still revising their design options, taking into account feedback from the public, including resistance to moving the outdoor track.

On June 6, the city council agreed to bond the dual renovation project for $216.7 million. Construction is set to begin in 2013 and wrap up by 2017. The city is now looking to hire a commissioning agent and a construction manager for the projects.
