Back to School Expo at the HUB Today

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Meriden elementary and middle school students can pick up a free backpack filled with supplies and meet members of local youth organizations at the HUB.

On Tuesday the HUB is sure to be a sea of children, as the city hosts its 8th annual Back to School Expo.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Meriden students heading into pre-K through eighth grade can pick up free backpacks filled with school supplies, and talk to a host of representatives from the 30 local youth programs and other social services who will have booths at the downtown HUB, located between State and Pratt Streets.

Last year, organizers gave out more than 1,500 book bags, and are hoping to do the same on Tuesday.

Before children can receive a backpack they have to visit six of the different groups, said organizer Larry Pelletier of Beat the Street Community Center.

"That's why we get so many agencies to come – (the kids) have to be a part of the expos," Pelltier said.

Children attending both private and public schools in Meriden are welcome.

Beat the Street and the Meriden/Wallingford NAACP started the event eight years ago, and today the Meriden Rotary Club and the Record-Journal also help organize.
