Board of Ed Notes: High School Graduation, Enrollment Projections, and Robotics

The BOE discussed Platt and Maloney High Schools at its Tuesday night meeting.

In addition to voting to decrease the at its Tuesday night meeting, the Board of Education discussed a number of events and issues related to Platt and Maloney High Schools

The Board set this year’s high school graduation date and time for Monday, June 20, 2011, at 6pm.

It also adopted new eight-year enrollment projections for Platt and Maloney high schools, required as part of the grant for the simultaneous renovation projects poised to begin at both schools. According to reports prepared by an independent consultant:

  • Enrollment at Maloney is expected to reach its eight-year high of 1,225 students in 2011 before dropping to a low of 1,162 in 2019 and then rebounding to 1,200 in 2020.
  • Enrollment at Platt should peak at 1,128 students in 2012 and bottom out at 951 students in 2018 before rising to 1,015 in 2020.

In addition, the board approved the GUS Robotics team’s field trip to St. Louis, Missouri, to compete in the FIRST Robotics World Championship this week.

The robotics team, which includes students from all three Meriden high schools--Platt, Maloney and Wilcox-- earned the right to compete by at the regional competition in Worcester, Mass., last month.
