Meriden Boys and Girls Club Recognized

The Board of Education paid homage to the group for its work on behalf of the district's expulsion program and getting troubled students get back on track.

 

Meriden President Mark Hughes Tuesday night presented the Community Support Award to the for its longrunning work with the school expulsion program. 

For many years, the Boys and Girls Club has worked with expelled students to help them meet the requirements to get back into the school system and achieve future success, Hughes explained.

"The Boys and Girls Club does invaluable work in the community," Hughes said before presenting a plaque to Don Maleto, Boys and Girls Club executive director.

Hughes also announced that Robert Conroy, unofficial director of the Boys and Girls Club's school expulsion program, has worked in the Meriden public school system for 50 years, eliciting a hearty round of applause from the audience.

At the podium, Conroy briefly praised the program, pointing out that several of its students have not only completed their high school education, but gone on to success in rigorous college studies.

Mateo also addressed the crowd, saying: "The crew standing behind me has done an outstanding job with the toughest students in our district at a tough time in their lives."
