Budget Surplus Funds School Repairs and New Technology

A surplus in the 2011–12 Meriden school budget paid for building repairs at several schools and a new computer center at Pulaski Elementary.

 

Thanks to a surplus in last year’s budget, the Meriden Public Schools were able to spring for some much-needed repairs as well as new instructional materials, reported Michael Grove, Assistant Superintendent for Finance, at Tueday’s Board of Education Finance Committee meeting.

Unspent money was available, for instance, in the following line items of the budget:

  • $727,769 in certified salaries
  • $1.28 million in tuitions
  • $437,371 in heat energy

That money was transferred to other areas to pay for, among other things, a new computer center at Casimir Pulaski Elementary School, textbooks, and a number of school building repairs that were not originally included in last year’s budget.

“When you look at all the work that got done this year because of all the good budget work, it’s impressive,” School Superintendent Mark Benigni told the committee.
