Five People You Need to Know at Your Child's School

Sending your child off to school for the first time? Get to know these key people.

Your child is starting school for the first time in a few short days. The thought of putting her on the big yellow bus and sending her off on her own is terrifying. It’s not easy letting go, but you might feel better if you know she’s in good hands. You can do that by getting to know the people who watch over your child during the school day—her “school family.”

Your Child’s Teacher
The classroom teacher is the adult your child spends the most time with during the school day. This is the person who will discipline, encourage, possibly inspire, and of course, teach your child. Get to know what the teacher’s expectations are. Ask what you can do to help your child get the most out of the school experience, and follow the advice. And ask how you can help out. Getting involved shows your child that you think school is important.

The Principal
The principal runs the school and has ultimate responsibility over all the children, including yours. He or she sets the tone for the school. If your child’s elementary school has a warm, welcoming, respectful atmosphere, you have the principal to thank. Take advantage of open houses or other school events for families to introduce yourself and get to know your child’s principal. (And get to know the principal’s secretary while you’re at it. She knows everything.)

The Class Parent
The class parent is the main volunteer in the classroom. Your child will see a lot of this person during the year. It’s a good idea to get to know the class parent, or at least one other parent in your child’s class, in case questions come up about assignments or other issues. If your child loses a notice or permission slip (and let’s face it, it’s bound to happen at least once), it’s good to have a parent you can call to get the scoop.

The School Nurse
When your child gets hurt or sick during school, the nurse will be there to provide care and comfort. And if your child has health issues such as asthma or allergies, this is the person who will keep and dispense the medicine he or she may need. The nurse can help you through the maze of paperwork that comes with these medical conditions. Making sure the nurse knows your child and his or her medical needs can help put your mind at ease.

The Bus Driver
On the ride to and from school, the bus driver has responsibility for your child. It’s good to know your child’s bus driver in case your child has trouble with other kids on the bus. The bus driver can also keep you posted about your child’s behavior.

Getting to know these five key people can help ensure a smoother, more rewarding school experience for your child—and you.
