Megan’s Writing:

"Here comes the ball, watch out!" exclaimed my friend Grace showing off her talent as she threw the soft football to me.  We were at the Ogunquit Beach in Maine, playing a carefree game of football.  As I rushed to make a touchdown, I felt something hard and bumpy under my left foot squirming in the hot sand.  I wondered to myself, what did I just step on?

Just then, I got off the substance I was standing on and began to brush the soft sand off of it revealing a dark brown mossy shell with artistic patterns.  As I looked closer, I spied dark green leathery skin on the object.  I reached my hand out slowly, and felt the scaly and slimy arms and legs of the object.  Suddenly I got a great idea, I ran over to my denim beach bag and got my shovel, and back to the object I went.  I carefully dug out the rest of the substance and realized that this was no ordinary object.  It was an individual turtle!  I felt amazed because never in a million years would I have guessed for a turtle to be underneath the sand.

Just then, I slowly and gently knocked on the turtle's bumpy shell.  "Hello", I said making sure the turtle was still alive, and I heard him say "stop".  I was shocked because that noise was coming from a sea creature.  I mumbled "You can talk," and the turtle replied "Yes, and I can sing."  So the turtle sang a song and I heard discord.  I introduced myself and asked to be the turtle's friend and of course he said yes.  I felt so ecstatic because I found a magical talking turtle on the beach all by myself.

"Come on," I shouted as I sprinted to the ocean.  The turtle slowly moved along and finally got to the sea. We both dove head first in the water and we immediately saw puffer fish swimming just below the surface.  "Puffer fish are very interesting fish," said the turtle. He said that they are very big when they puff to scare away enemies.  "Wow," I screamed, bubbles came up from my mouth just as I saw a bunch of sea horses swimming by us.  The turtle said "Male sea horses give birth to the babies not the female."  I felt amazed because up until now I didn't know anything about puffer fish or sea horses and now I do.

"Let's go, Megan," I heard my mom call me to go to my brother's performance as I was getting a breath of air.  "Goodbye," I said to the turtle.  As I swam back to shore, I thought about how fun today was and how I would never forget it.
