Located near the intersection of Broad Street and Gale Avenue, BIW Woodcarving & Taxidermy School is the only taxidermy school in Connecticut. Owned by Brian McGray, the private school has been in business since 1975. Customers can visit the shop and browse for woodcarving books, supplies or gifts such as carved decoys, owls or signs, or they can sign up for classes to be trained in taxidermy mounting as a hobby or for professional use. Classes are limited to four students per session and although costs vary, the first completed mount usually covers most of the cost of the class. All materials and tools for the classes are provided. Animals that can be mounted include predators, birds, fish, mammals and exotics.
