Two men held up a clerk at the Diamond Cutz salon.
Meriden police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the “Diamond Cutz” hair salon at 171 Broad St., last night. The store clerk told police Wednesday night he had been robbed at gunpoint by two unknown males. Police said the two suspects were both darker skinned black or Hispanic males. One of them displayed a black semi-automatic handgun and was wearing what appears to be a grey or white hooded sweatshirt. This male demanded everything that the store employee had on his person. Items taken included jewelry, a cell phone, car keys as well as cash and miscellaneous items within the employee’s wallet, police said. Update: Richard P. Silverstein, the New Haven lawyer representing Alex Wullaert of Branford who is accused of animal cruelty in connection with the of killing his own dog, said Wullaert's case has been continued until June 5. Silverstein declined to comment on the case following Wullaert's arraignment Tuesday morning in New Haven Superior Court. Wullaert, before his arraignment, said he wanted to clarify one element of the accusations against him. He noted that press reports "said the dog peed on me." A Meriden man has been charged in connection with drug trafficking in Hartford, U.S. Attorney David B. Fein and Kimberly K. Mertz, special agent in charge of the FBI, announced today. Shakim White, 27, a.k.a. “Country” and “Lil Weezie,” is among 36 people, most of them from Hartford, who were charged under indictments returned by a Hartford federal grand jury. The indictments charged the suspects with various offenses related to the distribution of crack cocaine and possession and dealing of firearms. The third indictment was unsealed on May 9, 2012, after 10 of the defendants were arrested. The indictments stem from “Operation Vinefield,” a joint law enforcement investigation headed by the FBI’s Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes …

U.S. Dept. of Justice awards Meriden $42,000 to fight violent crime.
Meriden will receive $42,000 from the U.S. Dept. of Justice (USDOJ) to help reduce violent crime, Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced Thursday. Meriden was chosen along with 21 other cities and towns with the highest rates of violent crime in the state from 2007 through 2009. Together, those municipalities account for 82 percent of Connecticut’s violent crime and 75 percent of the inmates in the Department of Corrections, according to the governor’s statement. The 22 municipalities will share a $915,000 federal grant to coordinate anti-violence efforts. The grant prioritizes municipal efforts to coordinate violent crime response across multiple jurisdictions, the statement said. Each of the cities and towns will receive between $40,000 …
