The federal trial against Meriden police Officer Evan Cossette, the son of the police chief, began Monday.

At the opening of the trial of a Meriden police officer accused of excessive, the U.S. attorney said the case is “about abusing the power of the badge,” according to a report in the Record-Journal.

Meriden Officer Evan Cossette faces charges that he used force against a prisoner in 2010.

A police video that has circulated across media outlets depicting Cossette shoving prisoner Pedro Temich in a Meriden Police Department holding cell was brought up during testimony on Tuesday, the newspaper reported.
