Student Writer: Beverly Miller

This second grader's imagination is delightful.

This is our final official Student Writer for the 2010-2011 school year. Patch would like to thank Meriden Language Arts coordinators Joanne Conte and Susan Perrone, as well as Virginia Patsos for organizing and submitting a writing piece each week. Kudos go to the Meriden teachers who have developed the skills and enthusiasm for writing in thier students. We have enjoyed every story and poem and look forward to expanding the selections to Meriden paraochial schools in the fall. (Don't fear the two month wait, though – we'll continue to feature some student writing from essay contests and other venues throughout the summer, but not on a regular schedule.)

The Noisy Mystery

Thump, thump, as I was strolling down a garden path I noticed something unusual whizzing by. I decided to investigate.  When I was going into the garden, I heard a noise.  The noise was like this Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch.  Immediately, I noticed that I was sinking.  I had to think of a plan to stop sinking and find where that unusual noise was coming from.  I finally saw a stump.  I placed my foot on it and grabbed onto a limb.  I tried to lift myself out and when I was almost out of the quicksand, I started sinking again!  My head was almost under.  I grabbed onto another nearby stick and scrambled onto shore, I heard the strange noise again.

I spotted an unusual huge, weird, enormous object.  I ran after it and then stopped.  Immediately, I thought of a brilliant plan.  I decided that I would run as fast as a bicycle back home to build a trap, then race back to the garden and set up the trap, hide somewhere, and see if the unusual huge, weird, enormous object would be there.  I did all of that and I heard Kaboom!!!!!!   I whispered to myself, "My trap must have failed."  I checked to see if my trap was busted or not.  My trap didn't break even though I heard kaboom.

The object that was caught inside was a weird baby.  I was surprised. After I got out of the garden, I saw the missing posters that had the picture of the baby that I captured.  I saw the phone number on the missing poster.  In a flash, I walked to my house so I wouldn't injure the creature.  After I took one step forward, I heard another cry.  I noticed there was another baby creature.  I scooped up the other baby and I dashed home.  Finally, I called the number on the poster and exclaimed, "I found your twin babies." I told them my house number.  In a little while, the owners came and picked up their babies. Everyone was elated and the mystery was solved.
